1879 Oct 11 Northampton Mercury -
Thrapston Petty Sessions, Oct 6th - Before the Right Hon Lord Lyveden, and H.W. Beauford, Esq.
False Pretences - John Marsh, Woodford, was charged with obtaining, by false pretences, on 29th August, in the parish of Islip, of Thomas Cunnington, a pint of beer, of the value of twopence, with intent to defraud the said Thomas Cunnington. - The prosecuter's wife, Catherine Cunnington, deposed that the defendant came to her house, about 10am., and asked for a pint of beer. He said that Joseph Allen was down at Eli Hudson's and he would be up in a few minutes and pay for the beer. She did not know Allen except by repute as a machinist, or the prisoner. She let him have the beer, because she believed Allen had ordered it. Prisoner came again the same morning, and asked for another pint, giving Allen's name, but Witness refused to let him have it. The beer had not yet been paid for. - Joseph Allen, of Woodford, said he was superintendent of the late Mr. Mitchell's machines. He had known the prisoner for years, but did not, on Aug. 29 authorise him to obtain a pint of beer. Never authorised him to do so, and knew nothering of the matter until it was mentioned to him by the police. Had heard that the prisoner had tried to obtain beer before, but had been refused. - Thomas Cunnington, of the Rose and Crown Inn, at Islip, said the beer the prisoner had belonged to him. -In reply to the usual question, the prisoner declined to say anything. - He was committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions.

1881 Apr 30 Northampton Mercury -
Charge against a Publican - Thomas Cunnington, Rose and Crown Inn, Islip, was summoned by P.C. Arnold, for allowing drunkenness on his premises, on the 24th ins. - Mr. Atter defended. - The evidence of the complainant was that he heard singing and shouting proceeding from the defendant's house. On entering he found a man named Perkins, alias "Perk", who was drunk, and from whom the noise proceeded. - The defence was that "Perk" had been assisting Mr. John Moore, butcher, whose slaughter house is in the Rose and Crown yard, and that he was intoxicated before he came in the house, but had not been served with any beer. - The Bench dismissed the case.
