John (836) (see FAM NA5) and his brother William (837) sailed to USA on the brig Commerce arriving in Philadelphia 1819, and walked/canoed to Peel, County Ontario (just west of Toronto).
Williams' obituary states "He started from Toronto with
his belongings on an ox cart, and reached his farm after eight days travel through almost unbroken forest. Although there were settlers before him, it was two weeks before he met a living soul. Apparently the voices were the Caesar Family".
The farm he settled at was granted to John, Location Ticket dated 09 March 1821, and John received a Patent on 03 July 1829.
William bought the farm from John in 1832. John bought the farm across the road in 1823.
With many thanks to Dianne Youden, for her help over time with many small details in this FAM, and a "graveyard crawl" and enjoyable social visit which Liz and I had with her in September 2003.

Historical Information:
William Cunnington was one of the very early settlers of the northern part of Chinguacousy Township. He came from Northampton county, England to the state of Pennsylvania. After remaining there some two years, he traveled 200 miles to the Nigara Penisula by foot and canoe. After staying there two years, he moved to Lot 30, third line east, Chinguacousy, Peel County, in 1821 where he made his home for many years. He later retired to Brampton, passing on to his reward at the age of 96.
When he arrived at his farm it was two weeks before he was aware that any other white man was in the vicinity. Upon hearing a noise one morning, he was directed to where he located the Caesar Family. Two years later he married one of the young ladies of this Family. Of their seven sons and two daughters all chose to remain in Ontario, except two sons who removed the the Unites States and whose families still reside there2. (One son and one daughter probably died as infants).
Another source states that William came from Lincolnshire, England in 1820 3.
Pioneer settlers in William's part of Southern Ontario were faced with many hardships. Speaking of the early settlers ... "wherever they came from, they brought with them a religious tradition. But with "land to make", roads, houses, barns and fences all to build, few resources except their own determination, little cash income except from the sale of wood ashes, new settlers were hard pressed to meet urgent material needs. William Lyon MacKenzie reported thus on Chinguacousy in 1824: "Poverty and miserable roads." In those opening years there was no economic surplus to support church and minister ..." 4.
The first recorded land deeds for William show that on 28 June 1832 he bought 100 acres from John Cunnington for 50 pounds sterling. The next year on 2 March 1833 he bought 200 acres from Abraham Markle for 62 pounds, 5. Clearing the giant elms, cedar swamps and tangled bush with axe and oxen was certainly slow back-breaking toil. However, by 1843, ten years after buying his land, the tax assessor lists 50 of Williams' 300 acres as cultivated. He was also assessed for one house over four years, two oxen over four years, three milch cows, four horned cattle two-four years, and a framed house under two stories (This house was still standing in Sept. 1963.) The total evaluation was 164 pounds. 6
The next house William built was a two story dwelling. Built of large elm logs, hewn with a broad axe into 8 by 8 beams, this home stands as a tribute to the skill and patience of its builder. The present owner (Sept 1963) stated the walls were so well braced and the corners so sturdily joined, that he was able to put a thirty ton jack under one corner and raise one end of the bulding at a time so he could put in a cement foundation. He also mentioned that under one corner log there were the broken remains of an earthenware crock. He has remodelded the house and is living in it.
William and his Family were staunch adherents to the Methodist faith. They helped to build and support the first Methodist church in that area during 1851 and it was called Caesar's Church. This first church burned in a bush fire after thirteen years. He and his Family gave generously of their time and talents to help build buried in the little Caesar's Cemetery on the third concession east in Chinguacousy.
Stories Great grandfather lived at Lot 30 concession three east Chinguacousy. He walked from Toronto to his Crown deed farm in the year 1820. (Couthouse records show that the prior owners received the Crown deeds.) There were no roads at that time, all county. He made a shelter to sleep in that night and when he got up next morning he heard someone chopping at a distance. So he followed the sound and found a Family by the name of Caesar. Later he married one of the daughters named Eliza Caesar.
At one time he carried a grandfather clock from Toronto on his back. This clock was near seven and one-half feet tall. Toronto was a distance of thirty-three miles from his home. When he was ninety years old and retired in Brampton he would walk up to his son's farm before breakfast, a distance of nine miles 8. The first wagon he had he built himself, carrying the pieces bit by bit on his back for some distance. 9
Great grandfather was a walker. He had a kind of a trot. One morning he walked to his son's home in the country before breakfast. They were going to Orangville for the fair. His son asked him to wait while he hitched the horses to the buggy. William said he would go ahead. He started walking and as the story goes they had to hurry the horses right along to ever catch him. Earlier in his life, he packed a hundred pounds of sugar on his back from Tornonto to his home. 10.
Obituary. "Mr. William Cunnington, one of the oldest men of county of Peel, died at the residence of his son Jacob, on Friday afternoon last, at the patriarchal age of 96 years, He was, therefore as old as the century and could have taken up arms in the battle of Waterloo. He witnessed numerous and wonderful changes in all departments of life. Coming to Canada at the age of fifteen he procured a farm in the northern part of Chinguacousy. Starting from Toronto with his belongings upon an ox cart, he reached his farm after eight days travel through an almost unbroken forest. Although there were settlers before him, it was two weeks bfore he met a living soul. Going to work with a will and a determination, and being a man of wonderful vitality, he not only succeeded in hewing himself a home, but in accumulating considerable property. He cleared a great deal of land, the fruits of which both he and his Family enjoyed in after years. He resided in Brampton the last twenty-five years of his life, but until quite recently, thought nothing of walking to his son's residence in Caledon. He was an Englishman by birth, was an upright and honest man, of firm determination, but kindly and genial disposition. His Family numbered six sons and two daughters. With one exception they all survive him and are in prosperous circumstances.
The funeral, which took place in Caesar's Cemetery on Sunday morning, was well attended. The service at the house was conducted by Reverned J.J. Redditt, of St. Pauls's Church with which the deceased was for years connected." 11
